Women, Be Your Own Boss

Ladies, Be Your Own Boss Ladies, Be Your Own Boss Regardless of whether you are a specialist, attorney, researcher, celebrated entertainer, individual from the illustrious family or mother to kids in your own family, all ladies will leave a heritage, and it is up to every last one of us to choose what it is. That is the message I looked to bestow this month when I gave the beginning location to graduating seniors at Immaculate Heart High School, a Catholic school private academy for young ladies in Los Angeles. Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex , Tyra Banks and Mary Tyler Moore are among the most popular alumni of this school. Numerous other graduated class have proceeded to scan for remedies for disease, take care of foundation issues in urban communities, exhort Fortune 500 organizations on money related issues, rock their children around evening time and wipe away the tears of their three-year-olds when they skin their knees. Each activity is not any more significant than the last. What I accept is significant for young ladies to comprehend is this: No issue what way you pick and where your excursion takes you - you ought to be the supervisor of your own life. The way has been cleared for the present female alumni to have each open door possible. The advancement ladies have made - just between the time I graduated secondary school and had youngsters - is faltering. I watched us acquire the rights to apply for a charge card without a male co-endorser (1974), sit on jury pools (1975), work while pregnant (1978) and be admitted to the Virginia Military Institute and the Citadel (1996). Be that as it may, from my 60 years experience being a lady and 35 years being a lifelong lady, I can likewise disclose to you it's not in every case simple being a lady. We still just win 80 pennies all things considered, for each dollar a man makes. Provocation in the working environment is so basic it has started the far reaching #MeToo development. Ladies hold just 107 of the 535 seats in the U.S. Congress and our nation hasn't yet chosen a female president. Young ladies entering the workforce today will probably see they work more enthusiastically as acknowledged than their male partners. They will most likely go to each gathering somewhat more arranged than their male partners and can hope to shuffle more than their ordinary male associate. Be that as it may, young ladies additionally need to know this: You will have the chance to have a progressively excellent, rich and balanced life than I can start to clarify on the grounds that being a lady today shakes. You can travel to the moon and be a mother simultaneously. You can be a financier on Wall Street and breastfeed in the lunchroom. You can lead a calamity aid venture, pursue chose position and code, code, code. So much is accessible to you - you simply need to trust in yourself enough to put it all on the line. What's more, this is the piece of the discussion I need to ensure we are having with young ladies today. Since now and again our most serious issue isn't the barricades the world hurls for us - it's the voice in our own head that is keeping us down . So on the off chance that you need a layout to move toward life, I recommend the accompanying: Absolutely never set up with mansplaining. This last thing is so significant. We invest so much energy driving our alumni to concentrate on what's to come. We ask them - what are you doing straightaway, where are you headed and what would you like to be? At the point when we do this, we can't resist the urge to welcome correlation. What's more, contrasting yourself with others isn't just an exercise in futility; as creator Rachel Hollis says, it is the passing of all euphoria. The genuine key to progress - in work and throughout everyday life - is in perceiving the significance of who and where we are today and what we have at this time. In the event that you can concentrate on being a superior individual today than you were yesterday, you will succeed regardless of where life's up and downs take you. What gets you through your triumphs and your difficulties is trusting in yourself and perceiving your gifts, each and every day. So whether you are brimming with expectation and good faith, terrified, positive of where your way is taking you or uncertain of your following stage, realize that you can generally focus yourself with a basic thank you for what you have at this time. In the event that you choose to live in appreciation for what you have today, for what you were today and for who you were today - at that point you will live a cheerful and deliberate life. Ladies, be whoever you need to be. In any case, be the chief - in the working environment and in your own lives. What's more, be benevolent to yourselves and one another. This life is just comparable to your outlook and you and only you are totally accountable for that. Is it accurate to say that you are a business? Look at our Talent Solutions Blog . How Would You Answer This Client Concern

Developing the Next Generation of Rainmakers How Would You Answer This Client Concern? A lawyer I coach recently left a small firm to rejoin a 100 lawyer firm he had left 10 years ago. He believed his clients would greatly value that his firm would be able to handle a wide range of legal issues and would have the bench strength needed for larger matters. During a recent lunch with a group of clients, he was surprised to learn they were actually concerned about his new firm. Instead of seeing the value of full service and bench strength, those clients were concerned that the firm would charge higer rates. He asked me how to respond. He never dreamed his clients would think 100 lawyers was a large firm. But, compared to the firm he left, it was certainly a larger firm. I told him here is how I would respond: Being a partner in ______ firm gives me the opportunity to provide you with the full service and bench strength advantages of a larger firm and the billing structure of a smaller firm. He liked that answer. What do you think? I practiced law for 37 years developing a national construction law practice representing some of the top highway and transportation construction contractors in the US.

4 On-the-Job Blunders We can all Learn From

4 On-the-Job Blunders We would all be able to Learn From Knowing I'm generally looking for content for my next article, a companion sent me this story: Individuals who have stuffed up busy working more than you. The article subtleties a scope of hands on botches, and in the wake of perusing, I understood there are a couple of exercises we as a whole can gain from these horrendous missteps: Slip-up Number 1: Failure to Watch Language at Work WHAT NOT TO DO OVER THE PA This is an exemplary case of what not to do when talking on a radio. A Reject Shop specialist in NSW was conveying the shutting down store message when she swore over the PA framework. I was in an end bring in the workplace and [a colleague] jumped on the PA and began overwhelming breathing once again my call, so I halted and said F**k off the shop was as yet open. Challenges. My awful. Exercise learned: Always use proficient language in proficient settings. While I believe it's imperative to screen your discourse any place you go, this is particularly valid for the work environment or any expert setting. No one can really tell who is tuning in to you as well as focusing on what you state and how you state it. It may be the case that a director or collaborator is deliberately tuning in to your discussions or that somebody in upper administration incidentally catches you state something. In any case, you would prefer not to offer anybody the chance to hold your discourse against you in such situations. Your discourse ought to consistently mirror your workplace or potentially proficient setting, for example proficient language. Misstep Number 2: Allowing Biases to Interfere with Work Commentators AWKWARD ASYLUM RANT A Western Australian radio commentator offered a supremacist comment about the pontoon individuals after he discovered they were getting paid more than our retired people. Issue is he didnt understand a town in the stations reach was the place some refuge searchers were homed. Off-kilter! One happened to hear what he said and stood up to the station, composing an official letter of grievance. The result? Since it was my first stuff up I got a token punishment, however I don't discuss the vessel individuals at all any longer, he let us know. Astute decision. Exercise learned: Don't Bring your Biases to Work Everybody has predispositions; this is the same old thing. However, where and how we choose to communicate those inclinations is regularly what prompts inconvenience. On the off chance that the radio broadcaster is a supremacist against 'pontoon individuals, that is his right. However, he needs to leave that outside of work. The workplace (or radio corner) is a bad situation for representatives to put their inclinations, partialities, and so forth on full presentation. Additionally, if your suppositions and emotions are irrelevant to your activity or the organization, hold them for outside of work (in an individual articulation, obviously). The radio broadcaster was vexed that the vessel individuals were getting paid more than beneficiaries. Alright. Indeed, even this, in the event that it was a type of shamefulness or bad behavior, doesn't warrant the broadcaster to communicate his inclination as well as preference toward that gathering of individuals. In the event that a worker feels something is uncalled for at work, the individual in question should move toward his/her chief or HR division about the issue, not go off rambling racial slurs and put-down at the individual's will. Error Number 3: Using Work Resources for Pleasure Gotten ON THE PERVE The Macquarie Banker gazing at Miranda Kerr photos not understanding the world was watching him on TV turned into a web based life sensation short-term, however his shabby propensities caused an inside HR bad dream (There's a video in the story). Exercise learned: Just be Smart That is to say, truly? Representatives are savvy enough to know at this point 1) your organization can screen all that you do on organization gadgets and 2) generally everything on the web is detectable. In case you're taking a gander at pornography or half-exposed ladies, you will get captured. Simply be shrewd. You're grinding away to work. Leave the for joy web surfing to the protection of your own home. Slip-up Number 4: Unpreparedness HELEN KAPALOS' 40 SECONDS OF DEAD AIR Helen Kapalos has had a considerable amount of on screen errors this year, such as calling previous Sunrise host Melissa Doyle Melanie, however this one takes the cake. Watch how the Today Tonight have battles to keep her self-control as makers leave her helpless on air. Exercise learned: Always be prepared This helpless commentator just couldn't take care of business. She's bumbling over her words; flipping through papers attempting to locate the correct data; and continually saying 'sorry' for not being readied and all together. Would you be able to envision your chief or a speaker doing this during a gathering/introduction? For sure on the off chance that you did this while endeavoring to offer another item or activity to a likely customer? Continually being composed and arranged is essential to 1) a gainful and productive workforce/organization and 2) achievement as a rule. Likewise, when viewing the video you will see nobody stepped in to help the grapple. Another exercise we can remove here is that you have to ensure you're readied and not rely upon others. By the day's end, you're a worker who has a particular job to fill in your organization. Regardless of whether you're a piece of the group, as long as you have your assignments/obligations finished you've done your part.

Poor Time Management Is It You Or Your Workload - Work It Daily

Poor Time Management Is It You Or Your Workload - Work It Daily It very well may be anything but difficult to fall behind with our work - things come up (like around a billion days off), or an absence of center, or we're worn out or not roused. Interesting that everybody has various occasions of day when they work best. A few people can't function admirably after three, others before 10. Me, for instance, I can't compose anything evening. Related: 7 Ways To Stay Productive At Work It is a battle. What's more, a portion of these reasons desert us feeling and overpowered. However, another explanation is that time the board is troublesome. At the point when we are not so much dealing with our time well, that can prompt ceaseless overpower leaving us to accept that the requests of our activity are excessively. Here and there they are. Now and then they aren't. The hard thing to perceive is the point at which the work is really overpowering and when you are basically not exquisitely dealing with your time. Throughout the years, I have been behind, overpowered and an awful time supervisor. In any case, I have become a period the board ace in those equivalent years. Here are a couple of tips to truly oversee time and assignments that I utilize that assist me with overcoming my daily agenda normally. Plot an arrangement At the point when I develop my week by week daily agenda for home and work, it is complete and intensive. Everything gets an appointed time in my week. Since I've been working on this for a long time, I realize to what extent a significant number of my assignments take, along these lines, that is the simple part. The week by week plan keeps me on task. That being stated, stuff comes up, so you need to see that rundown and comprehend what will be a need this week â€" like it must be done â€" and what can tumble off into one week from now. On the off chance that you see similar undertakings tumbling off into the next week constantly, you realize that that errand is either not a need, or not a need to you. In any case, in the event that it is a need to another person (possibly your supervisor of customer), at that point it needs to complete by somebody and ought not be tumbling off each week. As things tumble off, have an approach to catch that for one week from now and poof, you are out of nowhere working following week's undertaking rundown to spare yourself time one week from now. At the point when you plot out your week, you may have the option to spot times of personal time, which feels great. Trust me, they will get filled before the week's over. The other thing to pay special mind to is occupied work. Occupied work is the quickest method to overpower there is. Here's the place I would request that you really investigate the undertakings that you are doing intently. Are there alternate ways? Are there approaches to accelerate the undertaking? Is the errand conveying esteem? On the off chance that you can discover alternate ways to your bustling work or find that the assignment isn't even pertinent, think about what â€" you get time back for stuff that truly matters. When it is overpower? Here and there the best-laid plans can't fit into the given time holder of work. At the point when this occurs, I would urge you to do a couple of things. What's more, I am sorry to state that shockingly the vast majority of them are hard. State Not currently In the event that you are in any way similar to me, I need to over-convey. I need to stun individuals with the speed and precision that I can create the outcomes that they have to see. Be that as it may, some of the time, my crisis isn't the chief or customer crisis. It's mine. At the point when it is exclusively mine, it gets pushed. I will check with those individuals first, yet on the off chance that we as a whole concur, that assignment will be postponed. Talk with your colleagues Your colleagues can frequently give you the alternate routes you're searching for. They additionally may have the option to step up with assistance on the off chance that they are less overpowered right now. It will be impermanent, however it will crush that overpower feeling. Talk with your chief This one is the most hazardous, yet when all else falls flat, talk with your supervisor. Don't hesitate to impart to them how you've sorted out your week and time and inquire as to whether there are things that can be moved into one week from now or in the event that they have any alternate routes that they've found. A few managers are available to this, others… less so track with care here. On the off chance that toward the finish of this you find that without fail, after a seemingly endless amount of time after month, you are submerged and overpowered regardless of your sorting out your time, you can have a sense of safety that the test is the outstanding task at hand. Furthermore, if nobody in the association needs to assist you with handling that remaining burden, well, as CAREEREALISM says: Every activity is transitory. Four sure signs your interviewer is committed to diversity and inclusion Viewpoint careers advice blog

Four sure signs your interviewer is committed to diversity and inclusion First of all, congratulations on your interview! No doubt your preparation is now in full swing â€" researching the organisation and preparing your answers to common interview questions, as well as anticipating those that might come from left field. And whilst, of course, your performance in the interview room is hugely important (and thorough preparation will have a huge bearing on that), it’s also crucial that you use this time to assess, for yourself, whether this employer really is right for you. Why you should want to work for a diverse and inclusive employer Increasingly, and as I detailed in my last blog, more and more candidates are realising the importance of working for an employer that is committed to diversity and inclusion (DI). In fact, almost one in five (18%) of respondents to a recent Glassdoor survey cited a commitment to diversity and inclusion as among the most important factors in their  decision to join their organisation. And the reasons why are plain to see by working for an employer who values diversity and inclusion, you’re more likely: To be part of an innovative and future-proofed business To be working in an environment which will help you develop your soft skills To go to work every day feeling included, instead of feeling like an outsider To find out more about the benefits of working for a diverse and inclusive employer, read my previous blog. Sounds obvious, right? It is â€" but unfortunately, it can be really challenging to build a full and honest picture of how (extensively), in reality, a given employer focuses on building a diverse workforce and fostering an inclusive workplace, until you actually work there. However, there are some signs you can and should look out for, both when conducting your pre-interview research, and during the interview process itself this is what I want to share with you in this blog. What to look out for during your pre-interview research Clues in the job description: What sort of language is used in their advertisement, and the promotional documents you have received so far? Have they used any gender-biased language? Research by Textio found that certain words are proven to appeal to either men or women. In fact, the word ‘proven’ is one of them, and is strongly linked to jobs that resulted in a male hire. Intriguingly, Textio also found that job postings that applied gender-neutral language were filled in less time, and attracted a more diverse mix of people. Research the organisation’s website for evidence: You may be able to establish key factors in defining how important diversity and inclusion is to the business by researching their website. For instance, they may have already published a specific ‘diversity and inclusion’ policy document or alluded to shared examples of their commitment to ‘DI’ in their company values or mission statement. You may also come across specific reports which are required to be made public by law on their website. In relatively recent times, there’s been an increased impetus in many countries for organisations to publish data around diversity and inclusion. For example, in the UK, by law, companies, charities and public-sector departments with 250 employees or more must publish their gender pay gap figures every year â€" this reporting will be available via their websites. Lastly, have they won any awards or received recognition for this? As above, the language that they use on their website could also indicate their position and commitment. Glassdoor reviews and social media channels: As many as 70% of people now look to a review site before making a decision on their career, but this should never be your only source of information. If you do research a new employer online, you should bear in mind that no Glassdoor review is ever perfect, and the scores can often be polarised as either very positive or very negative. However, by also looking at a company’s social media channels, you can get an idea of the community within that organisation. Do you see evidence of teambuilding activities or charitable events on Facebook or Instagram? Do managers engage with or share employees’ content on LinkedIn? Do they seem proud of what they do and who they work with, and is there a company #hashtag that shows this? If you search #WeareHays on Instagram, for example, you’ll see what we do â€" does the company you are considering proudly promote an equivalent? What do their benefits packages suggest about them? Have you already been attracted by the flexible working conditions the company offers? Do they have a shared parental leave policy? Akin to looking closely at the language they use on their website and in the application materials, you can identify whether specific employee benefits are suited for everyone or will work better for certain individuals. You may also be able to ascertain whether they have a regular internal programme of engaging with the likes of Pride events and International Women’s Day or celebrating cultural diversity. Is there diversity within the board of directors? If you find that the organisation is predominantly run by men or women or people of a certain ethnicity, this isn’t necessarily a red flag that diversity and inclusion doesn’t exist within the organisation, but it could give you something to think about during the interview. What do they as leaders of the organisation do to promote diversity and inclusivity, both internally and externally? While there are certainly many areas you can investigate before the interview itself, I would urge you not to rule out an employer just because you don’t find any overwhelming evidence of their commitment, and they aren’t ticking every single box. You can, and should, also use the actual interview to find out more information. Therefore, below I’ve plotted out what I think are four sure signs an employer is committed to diversity and inclusion, which you should look out for in your interview: Four sure signs to look out for in an interview: Diversity within the interview panel itself and a subsequent ‘walk around’: Who are you introduced to when you walk into the interview room or in a subsequent ‘walk around’? Are you greeted by a combination of men and women, perhaps of varying age and ethnicity, with differing personality types and perhaps a visible disability. Although you won’t be able to identify every type of diversity in your short time being interviewed, if your perception of the panel and initial workplace  â€˜optics’ is that diversity exists here, then it could be a fair reflection of the organisation as a whole. Inclusive communication at all levels: What is the dynamic between the panel members themselves and also with others? Have you been able to hear any of these panellists talking to staff outside the interview room, such as receptionists or administrators? The respect that members of the interview panel give to themselves and others could be indicative of how they treat one another on a day-to-day basis. A conversational interview throughout: Does the interview feel like a two-way process? Do you feel as though you are engaged in a conversation, as opposed to locked into an interrogation? Are you being asked questions that enquire about and capture the spirit of what you want from your career and what would be seeking from an employer like them in order to realise your potential? Do you feel that your answers are really being listened and responded to? How the interview panel communicates with you can be a strong indicator of how highly the company values inclusion. Ask questions that probe their culture and ethos: This is the point when you can enquire about specific internal groups, resources  or initiatives, or how the organisation came to win certain diversity related awards that you found out about that particularly resonated with you during your research. You could also directly ask the interviewers why they think diversity and inclusion is important, how they build an inclusive culture and other questions that probe their policy and the progress they are actually making. Perhaps ask the same question to more than one interviewer to see if they have more than one example to share with you. Crucially, if the organisation has made a meaningful commitment to diversity and inclusion, then each of the interviewers should be able to give their own interpretation of how the organisation has gone about it. To sum up, through thorough pre-interview research, together with looking out for the above four factors during the interview itself, you will be able to build a real sense of the employer’s genuine commitment to building a diverse workforce and an inclusive culture. And in turn, importantly, how they will welcome you, and all the unique differences you will bring into their organisation. Did you find this blog interesting? This will be a distinct advantage in your career. So, you think I am ridiculing you? No. Try not to misunderstand me. I was in precisely the same position a couple of years back.As a fresher and a designing alumni, the fantasy of the considerable number of understudies in our group was to go along with one of the IT mammoths. I made a decent attempt, went to off-grounds interviews, cleared the inclination, GD, HR round lastly got set in Infosys. No coding/programming tests.First work with an IT mammoth, great compensation for a fresher, a half year preparing, and this privilege here in my old neighborhood. I was on cloud nine. But hold up … Did I reveal to you something? - I abhor programming. It detested me as well. I suck at coding. Years of no enthusiasm for something can't be changed by a half year of preparing. Their preparation program was acceptable, I don't deny it. Be that as it may, it was not working for me.So when I took up the two tests towar d the finish of a half year - I failed huge time.According to the arrangement, we ought to be ended. Around 20-25 of us were called to the HR lodge. We were all so embarrassed to try and look at one another. Myself and one of my cluster mates who had become old buddies during the a half year preparing, were among them. The HR requested that we give up our ID cards, gave some persuasive discourse like disappointment is venturing stone to progress … blah … blah … and requested that we leave. That is it. It was all over in a day. A half year exertion, all gone waste. Is it time to go back to school Heres how to tell. - When I Grow Up

Is it an opportunity to return to class Heres how to tell. - When I Grow Up There comes a period in a large number of my customers profession change disclosure where we go to an intersection and need to inquire: Is it an opportunity to return to class? Would they be able to make the fantasy profession theyre looking for without a degree or authentication? Do they have to invest the time, cash and vitality on school so as to offer what they imagine? When are classes important, and when are they a stalling apparatus? Probably the saddest thing I experience are innovative, canny, driven ladies with a graduate certificate that they never needed. When they come to me, theyre countless dollars owing debtors and lament the years behind them. Graduate school is a simple response to So, what do you do? (otherwise known as The Dreaded Question). Theres no compelling reason to meander aimlessly about what youre presently accomplishing for work and what you long to do theres only a streamlined truth that is edible for the individual who inquired. Graduate school is likewise a decent method to fool yourself into feeling occupied and activity arranged, and in this manner gainful. Be that as it may, when you realize you have no enthusiasm for seeking after what you went to class forits really a tremendous delaying apparatus. Graduate school is additionally how we disclose to ourselves we become genuine in something or the other. Our general public prizes advanced education with master status, and we regularly persuade ourselves that theres no other method to get that mastery than to get a degree. What Ive realized is that higher learning is something, yet not all that matters. A couple of months back, I battled with the choice regarding whether to restore my International Coaching Federation status of being a Professional Certified Coach. Getting confirmed in 2009 and afterward propelling my certification in 2012 was a significant wellspring of pride for me. In 2015, however, I could see that it wasnt the reason I was getting employed. I can in reality just recall one discussion with a forthcoming customer who asked me top to bottom inquiries about my preparation its scarcely been referenced something else! I know firsthand that my accreditation or any confirmation! is not what my fruitful inventive vocation most hinges upon. In the event that youre not appearing to be in a controlled calling, choosing to hit the books needs to come down to being really keen on the point youll be studying. For genuine. In the event that you have practically zero enthusiasm for finding out about expert association, at that point dont join to for a course thatll give you your affirmation to be an expert coordinator. Presently, this doesnt mean that you shouldnt hang out your shingle as an expert coordinator. On the off chance that you have the range of abilities, the intrigue and the individual crucial make that your vocation, at that point let it all out! Simply know the course you can take initially can be the lets-get-some-guinea-pig-customers and-analysis as opposed to the lets-get-an accreditation course. Fortunately the two courses are absolutely legitimate and can prompt similarly effective organizations! building your confidence as a lead-in to the work you need to be doing. This is actually the fundamental objective for any starting entrepreneur. Whatever you offer, whoever you work with, whatever you take a shot at or concentrate should be a certainty building experience or relationship. Much the same as each apprentice, I had no clue about the outcomes my first training customer would get working with me in 2008 but since I had just begun my life instructing classes, I was almost certain I wouldnt break her (and I advised her so much!). A confirmation program or degree can give you the structure you have to accomplish your best work with your customers yet so can experimentation work with guinea pigs, when youre still certain you can convey on what you guarantee them. What's more, recall, theres a lot of advantages of being an apprentice, so dont hurry through it! fitting into your way of life objectives and timeline. Two integral reasons I turned into an ensured life mentor rather than a social laborer or analyst was on the grounds that (an) I didnt need to return to class in a manner that would take long periods of mine or leave me in significant obligation (b) I realized I was too touchy to even think about talking to individuals about their overwhelming issues, returning to their youth or investigating things that were horrible for them. At the point when I chose to get my confirmation, I chose a program whose classes were instructed via telephone. The modules could be taken in any request, classes were happening 15ish hours daily during the week, and you had two years to finish the preparation without paying any additional fees. That sort of learning fit with my all day work plan, and the expense of the program fit inside my financial plan. That all worked for where I was in 2007, and what my objectives were. Since Ive yet to enable a cus tomer to discover their what without discovering their how, I know theres a program out there that works for you should you choose you need preparing, an affirmation or a degree. your own worth system. School must be significant to you. It must be something you are pleased with. Eventually, I chose to reestablish my PCC qualification this past December not on the grounds that its a represent the deciding moment for my customers, however its a represent the deciding moment for me. Im glad for my confirmation. Im pleased with my accreditation. Im glad for the letters that I can put after my name. That speaks for me to the individuals who choose to investigate what those letters mean and how I got them. Eventually, my own worth framework and feeling of pride prompted me putting my time, vitality and cash into that certification restoration. Regardless of whether you choose to return to class or not, make a move in a way that lines up with the vision you have for your profession later on. I know individuals that take classes only in light of the fact that they have an individual intrigue and hear a little voice advising them to, and that prompts them finding a vocation way theyre enthusiastic about. Tune in to your gut, avoid the shoulds, and move forward such that feels liberating and engaging to you. Did you return to class here and there? What settled on you settle on that choice, or take a pass? I wanna hear it in the remark beneath!

5 Ways to Optimize Your Office

5 Ways to Optimize Your Office The key to a productive workday is to 1) fuel yourself with coffee and 2) work in a bright and clean environment. Whether you work from a small office at home or work in an office with other colleagues, its essential to create a space where you can be productive and make the most of every minute of your working day. Making an effort to create a workspace which is positive and free from distractions can be a huge factor in your success. Below are multiple ways you can optimize your office and turn your working space into a calm, positive and productive zone. 1. Pretty Decor To optimize your office, you need to make your space look great so that you actually want to work there. For a home office, you may want to add some pretty decor. A minimal look comprising of neutral walls and necessary office furniture is a perfect place to start. With a home office, you have more control over how you want it to look. Inject some of your personality into your office with a bright feature wall. You could display all of your achievements and favorite quotes on this feature wall for motivation as you work. If you work in a big office with other people, you may want to stick to more whites and greys to create a bright and clean space. 2. Add Flowers and Plants Another great way to add a bit of color to your office is with plants. The more greenery, the better! The addition of flowers and plants will make your office feel more homely and its also a great way of adding a pop of color. Plants also create a nice and calming atmosphere which is what you want when youre busy with lots of deadlines. Dont forget to water the plants regularly and put them in pretty pots to make the office look super stylish. 3. Create a Bright Environment No-one wants to sit in a dull room while they work. Sitting in poor lighting will make you feel unmotivated and tired and youll also find it hard to concentrate. If you have great natural lighting, then make the most of that. If you dont, its worth investing in decent lighting. Brighter bulbs, lamps on desks anything goes. Even fairy lights would be a nice touch. A bright environment will make you feel more awake and productive. 4. Have a Social Area Everyone needs a break. Having a social area in the office is a great idea. This is a place where people can take a break or simply refresh their minds for a couple of minutes. The social area should be a warm, relaxing and inviting area so when decorating, think of calming colors like blue. Provide comfortable sofas for people to sit on and space where people can grab a drink. Water dispensers, a coffee machine, and a mini snacks bar would all be great additions to the social area. 5. Clean space, clear mind No-one can work in an environment thats messy. One way of creating less clutter is by having a good clear out. Get rid of pens that dont work, documents that arent needed and random bits that have somehow ended up in your cupboards. Store all important things together with clear labels so that you know where to look when you need to find them. Having a clean and tidy office will make you mind clearer so you can concentrate on getting all of your daily tasks done.

A Good Workout Your Key to Success at Work! - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

A Good Workout Your Key to Success at Work! - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career We’ve all heard the catch phrase, “get a competitive edge at work” but what about KEEPING your competitive edge once you have a job!   One of the best ways to stay competitive is to maintain your energy level so you can meet the challenges at work.   I suggest to anyone who feels overwhelmed by their work load and tired from constant stress of meeting deadlines, that you find some time each day (if possible before work or during a lunch break) to quiet your mind, refresh your spirit and renew your energy. One way to achieve this goal is to commit yourself to participate in some vigorous exercise that you can do at least 3-5 days per week.   Releasing endorphins can help you stay mentally tough. Studies show that combining a good nights sleep with a balanced diet and regular exercise improves job performance, time management and mental sharpness. A study by Jim McKenna from the University of Bristol showed that after exercising, participants returned to work more tolerant of themselves and more forgiving of their colleagues.  Peoples mood significantly improves after exercising.  People who exercise on work days are more productive, happier and suffer less stress than on non-gym days, scientists revealed today.  University of Bristol researchers found that employees who enjoyed a workout before going to work or exercised during lunch breaks were better equipped to handle whatever the day threw at them. It also found that peoples general mood improved on days of exercise but they became less calm on non-exercise days. The research, published in the International Journal of Workplace Health Management, is the first of its kind to prove that exercise during work hours has mental, as well as physical benefits. Jo Coulson, Research Associate in the Universitys Department of Exercise, Nutrition and Health Sciences, said: Our statistical results were very important. On exercise days, peoples mood significantly improved after exercising. Mood stayed about the same on days they didnt, with the exception of peoples sense of calm which deteriorated. Critically, workers performed significantly better on exercise days and across all three areas we measured, known as mental-interpersonal, output and time demands. The key findings were: Seventy two per cent reported improvements in time management on exercise days compared to non-exercise days. Seventy nine per cent said mental and interpersonal performance was better on days they exercised. Seventy four per cent said they managed their workload better. The questionnaire scores were 27 per cent higher on exercise days in categories such as dealing calmly with stress and 41 per cent higher for feeling motivated to work. Those who exercised were also 21 per cent higher for concentration on work, 25 per cent for working without unscheduled breaks and 22 per cent higher for finishing work on time. Feedback from focus groups found that people who built exercise into their workday were re-energised, calmer and more able to solve problems. Ms Coulson added: Its generally well-known now that there are many physical and mental health benefits that can be gained from regular exercise Read more: People Who Exercise on Workdays are Happier, Suffer Less Stress and are more Productive Based on the increasing demands for companies to cut costs and for workers to increase their productivity, basic competency at ones job wont be enough to keep your job. Employers want their staff to contribute more to their team (often with fewer resources) while expecting employees to maintain the high-standards for the quality of their output.  Considering the must-have skills listed below, I suggest workers have more pressure on them than ever to perform at a high level in order to stay employed. Workers can choose from one of two approaches: First, you could ignore the reality that work is stressful and stick with a familiar routine because it’s comfortable.   The problem here is that the status quo for your daily regimen is likely to involve no exercise, an unhealthy diet and over time could lead to compromising your health. The Second choice is you could become intellectually honest about your situation and seek ways to manage your stress; Find  realistic solutions to boost your sense of wellness so you can function optimally at work and at home.  In my view, exercise can no longer be viewed as a luxury for those elite, disciplined people who want to stay lean and fit. In todays competitive work environment, its a survival strategy that may determine who can endure and who will crumble under the stress. In Ruth Mantell’s recent WSJ article, Must-Have Job Skills in 23, she asserts that employers want workers to show greater skills and results. In 2013, she says, workers who want to remain competitive and desirable to their employers will need to do several things better than their co-workers:  For employers who want to get ahead, “basic competency won’t be enough.”   To win a promotion or land a job next year, expert say there are four must-have job skills: 1. Clear Communications “…is the ability to clearly articulate your point of view and the ability to create a connection through communication, says Holly Paul, U.S. recruiting leader at PricewaterhouseCoopers, the accounting and consulting firm based in New York. For job seekers in particular, clear communication can provide a snapshot of their work style to employers. 2. Personal branding Human-resources executives scour blogs, Twitter and professional networking sites such as LinkedIn when researching candidates, and its important that they like what they find. Thats your brand, thats how you represent yourself, says Peter Handal, CEO of Dale Carnegie Training, a Hauppauge, N.Y., provider of workplace-training services. If you post something that comes back to haunt you, people will see that. Workers also should make sure their personal brand is attractive and reflects well on employers. More and more employers are looking for employees to tweet on their behalf, to blog on their behalf, to build an audience and write compelling, snappy posts, says Meredith Haberfeld, an executive and career coach in New York. 3. Flexibility The ability to quickly respond to an employers changing needs will be important next year as organizations try to respond nimbly to customers. A lot of companies want us to work with their employees about how to get out of their comfort zone, how to adapt, says Mr. Handal. Somebodys job today may not be the same as next year. The ability to learn new skills is of top importance, says George Boué, human-resources vice president for Stiles, a real-estate services company in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. We want to know that if we roll out a new program or new tools that the folks we have on board are going to be open to learning, he says. 4. Productivity improvement In 2013, workers should find new ways to increase productivity, experts say. Executives are looking for a 20% improvement in employee performance next year from current levels, according to a recent survey by the Corporate Executive Board, an Arlington, Va., business research and advisory firm. When you are at your job, do you volunteer for projects? Are you looking for creative ways to help your organization, Mr. McDonald says. The way to really differentiate yourself is to be proactive. Companies that are considering adding workers in coming years want current employees to operate in growth mode now. My clients are looking for employees that have a great ability to understand what is wanted and needed, rather than needing to be told, Ms. Haberfeld says. Even hiring managers need to work on certain skills as organizations consider expanding next year. This report reinforces that in today’s competitive workplace there is more pressure than ever to stay focused, creative, flexible, and productive; the work environment can be intense and requires more energy and output from the average employee.  Its not surprising that if these increased demands are left unmanaged, they could lead to burnout and stress related illness.  The savvy worker will acknowledge that in order to get a competitive edge at work and maintain your “personal brand” as a top producer you’ll need to take better care of your physical health. With an increased demand for top performance in all areas at work, employees need to take a fresh look at their life habits to maintain mental toughness and a positive attitude.   In today’s fiercely competitive workplace, having a consistent exercise regimen, eating healthfully and getting enough sleep is no longer a luxury but it will make the difference between those who can stay on top of their game at work and those who get swallowed up or worse drown from all the stress. There is considerable evidence that upper management is also concerned with employees’ health habits as it affects their overall costs and productivity.   A new study that will be published in the Journal Population Health Management shows that eating unhealthily is linked with a 66 percent increased risk of loss of productivity, while rare exercise is linked with a 50 percent increased risk of low productivity. And smoking is linked with a 28 percent increased risk of loss of productivity, researchers found. Total  health related employee activity  loss accounts for 77 percent of all such loss and costs employers two to three times more than annual healthcare expenses.  Employers have become more cost conscious, (retaining fewer employees and demanding the same output from this group as they had from a larger pool of workers) and thereby are creating a corporate culture where only the “fittest” can survive and thrive. With increased pressure on employees to increase productivity, workers will need to adopt strategies and new behaviors to reduce stress while increasing overall strength and mental agility in order to manage the ever-intensifying demands placed on them.   In order for your mind to operate at its best, your body needs to be nourished and conditioned as stress builds, the mind becomes cluttered with thoughts and assignments and worries and there is little room left for fresh insights. There is no quick fix to increasing your physical stamina and mental acumen. Sticking to a healthy diet with occasional splurges and a steady exercise routine will pay off in the long run in reducing your stress, enabling you to stay focused, and can reduce your anxiety when faced with challenging people. A good workout can do wonders for clearing your mind and can raise you out of a mental rut.   The challenge for those who don’t have a regular exercise regimen is getting started with one.   It can help to have an exercise buddy but your buddy’s schedule may conflict with yours allowing for an excuse to skip exercising.   Follow Nike’s advice and Just Do It! Trust the word on the street and the medical research that indicates the multiple benefits of exercise.   We all have heard this ad nauseam but now the need for developing a consistent exercise regimen takes on new importance.   It’s not only good for your health but also good for your career! During your workout, try to find at least 20-30 minutes when you have no other distractions such as music, TV. Etc.   Use that time to allow the exhilaration to stimulate your senses, clear your thoughts and allow room in your head for new creative thoughts.   It’s amazing how many times I’ve been able to resolve conflicts in my mind with novel thoughts while running in the park that I couldn’t possibly have achieved even if I focused hours on the same challenge at my desk.
